People are always in a hurry to see who’s the smartest. They like to throw around all their achievements in hopes that it will somehow make them feel superior to another person. The reality is that no one person is better than anyone else. We each have our own strengths and weaknesses and do things in our own way. And truthfully there’s one highly important factor that decides how successful we’re going to be in life—and it’s not intelligence or measurable achievements. Believe it or not, that factor is your attitude.
Anyone who has been in the workplace will tell you that a good attitude will go a long way. Someone could be great at their job, but if their attitude needs some work, they’ll have a hard time getting ahead. Forbes has published an article on how important it is for a person to have a great attitude. When looking at the benefits, you also have to think about the consequences of having a bad one.
Have you ever dealt with someone on a regular basis who’s unlikable and unapproachable? At some point, we’ve all found ourselves in this situation, and chances are you’ve handled this predicament much like everyone else: by either avoiding the negative person or saying something you’ll regret later. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Rather than judging a person’s attitude on one particular day, try looking at them for who they are as an individual. Perhaps they have dealt with a lot of bullying in their lives and their attitude comes from a feeling they have deep inside. If one person were to come along and validate them as an individual, they might come out of their shell and start seeing the world differently. You could be that one person who changes their mindset.
The truth is that your attitude is one of the few things you can control in this life. You can’t control what you’re going to get on an aptitude test, but you can change the way you react to the world and everything it sends your way. Instead of complaining and thinking about all your challenges, use your energy and time to alter your behavior and develop a positive outlook. If you’re so focused on the negative aspects of your situation you won’t have the clarity or motivation to think up creative ways to solve your problems and get where you want to go.
Now is the time for you to start taking control of your life. Don’t let your bad habits and negative self-talk get the best of you. Instead of seeing the world for what it isn’t, you should start loving it for what it is. Who knows what you have been missing by having a cloudy disposition all the time. When you begin to work on your attitude, you will find that a number of doors will start opening up for you. These opportunities would never have presented themselves if you weren’t open to them, so the real question is whether you’re ready to step out of the shadows and see what this life has to offer . . .
