Stress & Fatigue

Health

In today’s fast-paced world we are all biting off more than we can chew. Spending sleepless nights at the library studying for exams, logging long hours at work, and running ourselves into the ground trying to maintain a picture-perfect home life have become the norm. We have turned into professional multitaskers, determined to optimize our time in order to increase our productivity. Unfortunately, our tendency to overextend ourselves is doing us more harm than good, leaving us time-crunched, overwhelmed, and worse yet – stressed.

Though we know there are many drawbacks associated with this fast-paced lifestyle, one of the biggest problems is that we are all left in a constant state of “fatigue” or “exhaustion”. But what does that really mean? Are we all truly suffering from a lack of energy or might it be something else?

Mislabeling Fatigue

If we look at the textbook definition, fatigue is defined as “extreme tiredness, typically resulting from mental or physical exertion or illness”. Ask a person to define fatigue and it is often described as being tired – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Unfortunately, using the umbrella term “fatigue” or “tired” to describe various physical, mental, and emotional symptoms often leads us to the wrong solution.

What do I mean by this?

sugar
If you use the word “tired” to describe how you are feeling, the obvious solution to relieve your tiredness would be energy. And what do we turn to when we need energy? For most of us – energy drinks, coffee, soda, and other snack items (e.g., candy, cookies, etc.). In other words, we reach for SUGAR and CAFFEINE – two well-known solutions for low energy.

Sugar

  • The fuel that our body runs on.
  • By eating sugar, you are in essence “refilling your gas tank” or giving your body the energy it needs to keep running.
  • Energy drinks, soda, and snack foods contain simple sugars that provide a quick burst of energy but typically result in a crash not long after consuming them.

Caffeine

  • A known stimulant.
  • Caffeine works to increase your energy levels by blocking the activity of a chemical in the brain that makes you feel tired and stimulating the release of a hormone that makes you feel energized.
  • When consumed in high doses, caffeine can overstimulate your nervous system causing you to feel jittery.

But what if the tiredness that you were describing wasn’t actually a result of low energy? Would sugar and caffeine still be the solution to your problem? Probably not. Here’s why –

When forced to further explain what they mean by tired, people frequently say:

  • Lack of mental focus
  • Decreased concentration
  • Brain fog
  • Suppressed mood

People often label their lack of mental focus as “tiredness”, their decreased concentration and afternoon brain fog as “fatigue”, and their suppressed mood as “exhaustion”. It would make sense then that sugar and caffeine would likely not provide relief from these symptoms. Unless, of course, any one of the symptoms listed above was a direct result of low energy. In which case, sugar and caffeine may provide relief.

Redefining the Energy Crisis

So – if the fatigue we are describing doesn’t actually mean ‘low energy’, rather it describes symptoms more closely related to poor brain performance, then the solution we are looking for is NOT sugar or caffeine. Instead, we need a solution that works to optimize brain function.

And what promotes optimal brain function?

Several things – adequate sleep, a healthy diet, exercise, and low stress levels are all things that will keep your brain working at its best. Unfortunately, since most of us live in a not-so-perfect world, we come up short some days. This means we need an alternative solution that can provide added protection to our brains on the days we find ourselves falling short.
